Child Poverty Increasing in JapanThe poverty rate among children in Japan has reached 16.3% this year. That is the worst level ever recorded in the country and the 4th highest among top 20 developed nations. Changes in employment practices are thought to be one factor; parents are less likely to have regular, permanent jobs than in earlier times. Along with that, many child-rearing families feel the public benefits available to them are insufficient. In August, the Cabinet approved guidelines to reduce child poverty, but the government has yet to come up with concrete measures. Our report covers an Osaka organization supporting poor single-mother households and a Fukuoka group providing direct aid to children.
